Anne with an E

Netflix summarizes Anne with an E like this: "A plucky orphan whose passions run deep finds an unlikely home with a spinster and her soft-spoken bachelor brother. Based on "Anne of Green Gables."

After reading this, you may think:
- What's the meaning of plucky, spinster and bachelor?
- And what's "Anne of Green Gables", after all?
Well, let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start!
Plucky is a synonym for brave, courageous, adventurous
Spinster is an old-fashioned (and unacceptable!) noun to define a woman who is not very young and probably won't marry
Bachelor is a man who has never married
Anne with an E is a Canadian television series based on the novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, an 11-year-old orphan girl, who is sent to two middle-aged siblings, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm in the fictional town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island.
Since its publication, Anne of Green Gables has been translated into at least 36 languages and has sold more than 50 million copies, making it one of the best selling books worldwide.
