TV in Brazil: 21% of programming is religious, says Ancine

Tired of Netflix? Brazilian Free-to-air (FTA) channels might be the alternative you've been looking for!

On August 23rd, 2017, Ancine published a report showing that religious programs represent 21% of Brazilian FTA television programming.

The study analyzed the 2016 programming of the biggest FTA television channels in the country - that is, Band, CNT, Globo, Record, RedeTV!, SBT, TV Brasil, TV Cultura and TV Gazeta - and found that more than one fifth of it is dedicated to religious content.

This number is much higher than other genres - news represent 16%, series 12%, varieties 7% and 6% sales over the phone. Nevertheless, this result would have been even greater, had regional programming been considered as well.

The report shows also a breakdown per channel:

CNT – 89.6%
RedeTV! – 43,7%
Record – 22,9%
Band – 16,2%
Gazeta – 15.7%
TV Brasil – 1,5%
Globo – 0,6%
Cultura – 0,6%
SBT – 0

If we tally the hours up - considering only these 9 channels -, we see that 16,758 hours and 37 minutes of religious programming were aired on Brazilian FTA channels in 2016.

The full report, in Portuguese, can be found here.
